Level 3 End-Point Assessment for Veterinary Nurse

Veterinary nursing is the supportive care of animals receiving treatment within a veterinary practice. A veterinary nurse works as a veterinary team member, providing expert nursing care for sick animals whilst playing a significant role in educating owners on maintaining the health of their pets. They carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures under veterinary direction.
Veterinary nurses are registered professionals and work within the standards and scope of practice defined by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Assessment methods:

The practical assessment is in the form of an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The apprentice will be observed performing a 12-station OSCE, each station lasting eight minutes. The practical assessment will allow them to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and behaviours in a simulated work environment.
Duration: 3-3.5 hours (including briefing, assessment and debriefing)

Graded: Pass, Fail

This will be a structured discussion between the apprentice and the independent assessor and will take place under controlled conditions. It will allow the apprentice to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and behaviours synoptically. Ten competency questions will be asked during the discussion, and these are taken from a bank that samples five thematic areas.

Graded: Pass, Distinction
